Because the student riders are presenting their skills in both, dressage and showjumping, the arena doesn’t only show the gracious presentation of horses in the dressage test but also the very exciting showjumping. The opponents of the teams in the showjumping competition have already been drawn on Tuesday the 21st. The mode says that a group of three nations has to ride on the three same horses but the nations can decide which rider rides which horse. In the first round every rider faces a parcours of nine fences. The parcours designer Mathias Rosellen provided a fair course and adapted the regulations properly. On the first day of the showjumping competition 27 horses and their 78 riders were judged by style. The score contains the perception of presentation and techniques, the general way of riding and the overall impression. Deducted from the presentation score is the number of penalty points for knock-downs and for exceeding the time allowed. At a nice and bright morning the competition started early at 8:30 am. After five hours of riding in the Deutsche Bank stadium, 39 riders qualified for the second round. Still 23 nations are in the competition which shows that the starting field is really balanced. Only three nations could send all of their riders into the next round. The athletes from Canada, New Zealand and Germany were all better than their direct opponents on the same horse. Spanish rider Santiago Nuñez and his team mate Diana Marsa also made it to the next round. He is very impressed by the venue. “It is great to ride in the Soers.
