Meta: Riding a horse for the first time and unsure what to wear? Don’t worry! We’re here to help explain what should and shouldn’t be worn when horseback riding.

Just like many other individual sports, horseback riding has its own unique clothing and tools. What you wear when riding a horse depends on the sport’s history, what the rider needs, and the type of riding you’re doing.

The clothing for horseback riding can be very different. Some riders wear formal outfits, like those in classical dressage with top hats. Others might wear more colorful and decorative clothes, like those in Western riding, with patterns like paisley wallpaper.

However, dressage is not just about riding; it’s about showing skill and grace. Its history is long and fascinating. Dressage riders often wear outfits that reflect this tradition and are pretty stylish.

During competitions like the ones organized by groups such as the United States Dressage Federation (USDF) in the U.S., there are specific clothing rules riders must follow. But even for casual rides, there are several rules that you should not miss.

Must-have items for riders

Every person who rides a horse needs good boots. Your boots should have a heel that’s at least 1 inch tall. This helps keep your foot from slipping out of the stirrups.

When thinking about what to wear for horseback riding, it’s a good idea to be ready for different situations. Bring a sweater or a long-sleeved shirt if you’re going on a long trail ride.Ā  This helps you stay warm if it’s chilly or protects you from the sun and pesky bugs you might run into on the trail. You can wear a tank top or a T-shirt on a hot day.

When you ride a horse, your legs need to move quickly. So, wear pants that let you move around comfortably, especially when you’re getting on and off the horse. You can pick stylish black, neutral, or beige leggings for English riding. If you’re into Western riding, wear straight-leg or skinny jeans with some stretch.

When you go horseback riding, they’ll usually give you a helmet to keep your head safe if you fall off the horse. If you’re a serious rider and want your helmet, wear a classic black one because it goes with everything you wear when riding.

You don’t have to wear gloves when riding, but they can be helpful for long rides to protect your hands. English riders usually wear leather gloves, while Western riders often choose classic cowhide gloves.

Dressing up as attendees

Many love watching sports, supporting teams, and following their favourite athletes. Sports are a big part of our lives, making the industry one of the fastest-growing in the world. For instance, in 2017/18, European sports leagues made ā‚¬28.4 billion ($30.07 billion) from broadcasting, sponsorships, and ticket sales alone.

Reports say the Premier League clubs made much more money in the 2021-22 season, reaching a record Ā£5.5 billion ($6.96 billion). This increase of 12 percent happened because fans were back in the stadiums after the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, attending football games is something peachy. People usually just dress up casually or wear their favorite teamā€™s merchandise. Itā€™s different for horse racing events, especially the prestigious derbies where even the royals attend.

At the Kentucky Derby, for instance, what you wear is essential. The Kentucky Derby is in the spring, so consider pastel colors for your Instagram-worthy look.

Women dress in pretty dresses or nice suits. Men often wear fancy jackets and pants, and sometimes shorts with jackets. Hats are typical but not required, but sunglasses are a must.Ā  Adding a stylish tie, like a silk or bow tie, can make your outfit unique.
