Wellington, FL- May 31, 2013- Prior to the Kentucky Derby, The Kentucky Horse Racing Commission (KHRC) approached StallWatch. As always, security was a concern for the 20 plus horses that entered the coveted first leg of the Triple Crown. The KHRC assigns Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies to guard and watch over and protect each horse.”StallWatch put a demonstration up in the barn,” said Marc Guilfoil, Deputy Executive Director of the KHRC. “We watched them install it and we had it on our cell phones. For about two weeks we played with it to see if it was what we wanted. Obviously, once you see it, you realize it’s what you need.”

“You can have all the security guards, but people have to take a break,” Guilford said. “This is 24/7. You can get up at night and watch it whenever you want. If you happen to miss an hours worth, you can always go back. We have a good marriage now. We’re going to utilize StallWatch as much as possible. Especially with the big events we have here in Kentucky.”
The KHRC had a camera installed at Gate Five at Churchill Downs, the main gate back and forth to the barn area.
“It is one of the better tools in the toolbox,” Guilford said. The safety and welfare of the horses–that’s what we’re here for.”

This year, trainer Rudy Rodriguez was under heightened scrutiny. Rodriguez is the trainer of Vyjack, a hot Derby contender who had gone undefeated until the Wood Memorial, where he came in third. Rodriguez had undergone license review due to past issues in New York and New Jersey. In a hearing with the KHRC, Rodriguez suggested and the KHRC agreed to 24/7 video surveillance for Vyjack. What was a negative became a positive. Rodriguez loved the system that allowed him and the KHRC to watch over Vyjack. The system allowed him to see that his horse was safe and well.
“I really like the cameras, especially the way they set everything up,” Rodgriguez said about the StallWatch system. “To be able to watch on the phone-it’s peace of mind-amazing. To me, everybody should be using it.”
