Question: Why is Xtra Heat so special to race fans?
Woodford Thoroughbreds. Besides being an elite racehorse, she has a rags to riches story. She was purchased from the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Two-Year-Olds in training sale for only $5,000. Cumulative, her stud fee and training costs to get her to the sale probably cost six times that much. As a sales prospect she didn’t stand out, she was small which doesn’t sell well and she had some vetting issues that really took prospective buyers off the filly. However…none of that stopped her from becoming a champion and that’s why people gravitate to her story, she rose above all expectations.

Question: Tell us more about her race record.
Woodford Thoroughbreds: Xtra Heat broke her maiden first time out as a 2 year old and then proceeded to win 5 stakes races including the Astarita (G2). She came back for her 3 year old campaign even stronger and more dominant, winning or placing in 13 consecutive stakes races in 2001, winning the Cicada (G3), Beaumont (G2), the Prioress (G1) and the Endine (G3). In addition she ran second, against the boys, in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1) which secured her Eclipse Award for that year’s Champion 3 Year Old Filly. In all, Xtra Heat set the modern day stakes record, with 25 (11 of them graded), and earned $2,389,635. Horses today just don’t race that consistently at that level, she was tough and it made her special.

Question: Why are you auctioning off her halter?
Woodford Thoroughbreds: We are thrilled Xtra Heat is getting the credit she deserves by being inducted in the National Racing Museum and Hall of Fame on August 6th. The ceremony will take place at the Fasig-Tipton sales pavilion in Saratoga Springs, NY at 10:30 a.m. We thought auctioning off her halter would be a fun way to shine the spotlight on this accomplishment and allow anyone who enjoyed following the filly to own a little piece of history. We also want to do our part in supporting off the track thoroughbreds, so ALL proceeds from the winning bidder are to be donated to the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance. TAA is a nonprofit organization that serves as both the accrediting body for aftercare facilities that care for Thoroughbreds following the conclusion of their racing careers and a fundraising body to support these approved facilities. Their role is vital to all of us who care about horses.

Question: How do I bid on the halter?
Woodford Thoroughbreds: You’ll want to go  to http://www.32auctions.com/XtraHeatHalter and set up an account. Bidding  opens at 8:00 a.m. Thursday, July 30th and closes at 9:00 p.m. Saturday,  August 8th.
